Bertie used to visit the newly opened Bakers St bakery on the corner of Napoleon st Cottesloe, for her morning coffee. She got chatting to the owner Daragh, about the decorating and talked about her business and gave him a card. a week or to later, when Bertie went in again for a coffee the owner asked her to come outside. He asked her what she would do with the white wall an the roof of the building, which had an unusual square board attached to it from the previous owners.
Bertie’s mind went wild as she rattled off so many ideas there an then. She got the job, to create some art to paint onto the exterior of the bakery, to set it apart form the rest of the street!
She set to work brainstorming themes and concepts. The owner wanted to promote LIFE as the main theme. The bread they make there is only made from the most basic ingredients water, flour, egg, yeast, salt, no unnecessary added ingredients.
Bertie wanted to keep it modern as well as incorporate the theme of life. So using her love for geometrics she created a giant icosahedron terrarium, which in the order of sacred geometry, actually represents water. This housed lots of different exotic plants and flowers, also which attracted some bees and insects.
To continue the mural onto the roof Bertie added triangles that she made to look as though they were, coming out of the terrarium and traveled upwards to create another giant prism that housed a bird with a icosahedron heart, linking the bottom and top of the long mural together. All the elements in some way lead back to that theme of life.
The mural was created using external acrylic paint and took a total of 15 hours to complete. Bertie was put onto the front page of the local newspaper ‘The Post.'
